Dell inspiron 1501 updating problems
If I don't intervene with F12 selection during Post screen it goes staight into PSA.
I can't find anything in boot setup to change it, I've tried every sequence possible in boot. Have since stripped it all down, thats everything out except CPU.

i did some searching before hand and came up with nothing..the Dell site is helpless.
i am currently working on a family members Dell inspiron 1501 Laptop.
All this after I loaned it to a friend and when he returned it the battery had come out in the bag.
Ok PEJAY, that clarifies it a little, you seem to have thick skin (per my first post); and are having a stoppage - then you have to make a selection to continue.
You might want to run the FULL Dell Diagnostics from the Dell Drivers & Utilities CD, or D/L the Diagnostics from Dell's and make a bootable disk to run it.This is different than starting the laptop then seeing it automatically go into PSA w/o any user intervention (Which is what I thought you meant by your original post). Q: You said you tried to update BIOS, was that successful? Q: What happens when you remove the battery, THEN try to boot the laptop? I've worked on a lot of Dells, but haven't seen this issue personally. This part needs clarification: "The other thing is Caps Lock, Number Lock and other lights are all flashing and buttons don't work except wifi will switch off."Q: Caps, Num Lock Flashing lights...when? In answer to your questions.1 Lights are all flashing together.2 Buttons not working are caps/lock & numbers/lock.3 Bios update a success4 Bios rev 2.6.35 With battery removed and power still on, after post screen straight into PSA With no power nothing. I'm seeing varying information online that states that BIOS updates are fixing these issues, and per the BIOS "Issues Fixed" Notes on Dell's site, that rev 2.6.3 A16; it states under fixes: 1. I also see that people that have replaced their batteries have corrected this issue. My Dell inspiron 1501 PSA starts automatically every time I boot. I have let it run to find there are no problems except for Num/Lock Caps/Lock & an Other Lights are flashing and Buttons don't work. I chose normal and got PSA, so let it run it's full cycle appox 60 mins with no probs found. Tried that & left it out over night & replaced it with new one.
The only way to start the machine is to via F12 and select HDD to boot. I have removed Cmos battery main battery and all leads. Booted up nothing had changed F2 setup put clock & callender right and rebooted selected normal and got PSA. Now no warning of battery probs, unless select F2 or F12 it goes straight into PSA, even when I remove HDD so its in cmos.
After a 1 hr gap put everything back with new Cmos battery corrected the time & date and it still stays the same Well I'm afraid my Dell Inspiron 1501 is still doing the imposible, before I updated the bios it started with an option with a message to say battery not recognised & won't be able to charge. The other thing is Caps Lock, Number Lock and other lights are all flashing and buttons don't work except wifi will switch off.
